Splattered Paper Collage

I love this book, can you tell by all my post-it tabs? (This one is the little 5"x7" inch miniature book version - so it's cute on the shelf too.)
We did the Splattered Paper Collage lesson on pg. 86, and it was FUN! First we drew and cut our frogs, and cat tails for the pond. They we splatter painted them inside boxes to keep the mess to a minimum. (You know "mess to a minimum" in art is relative.) Then we glued it all onto a background.

What Kids Say........

APPLEBY MAGNA SCHOOL 1934Image by theirhistory via Flickr

Kids get excited when they see me walking around campus with my big canvas art bag and boxes of supplies. I'm an artist-in-residence, so that means I'm only teaching art at the schools on "special" days. The children see me and know that someone is having art that day, and if I had a nickel for everytime a child asks, "Mrs. Smith are we having art today?" well......let's just say I'd have a lot of nickels.
Anyway, usually that question is what I hear all day long when I'm on a school campus - except for one darling little first grade girl with hair that shows she knows how to make the most of her playtime at recess. Everytime she sees me, she yells, "Mrs. Sniff, Mrs. Sniff, Are we having art today?" (That one is worth more than a nickel, don't you think?!)

Edible Art

Thanks to my friend, 1st grade teacher extraordinaire, Ms. Gang, I'm sharing some art just for fun today. Sorry, no step by step instructions for these.....my pumpkins always have triangle eyes, triangle nose, and a choppy toothed mouth. So, you can imagine what I'd do with a watermelon.
I think Van Gogh would be pleased, no?

Warm and Cool Flowers

Jatropha podagrica flowersImage by Martin_Heigan via Flickr

For this lesson, we first talk about "warm" and "cool" colors and how they can change the mood of a painting. We also talk about Georgia O'Keeffe and the way she painted flowers. Then students are given the opportunity to paint their own warm, or cool flowers.

Thanks Kermit King Elementary students.
